I start with a basic outline of the figure, trying to break the body up into geometric shapes to help me visualize how the figure will generally appear.

I start to draw a little detail to help me create references on the body.

Here I'm replacing some of the original lines with more detail. I start with the face because it helps me visualize the figure better.

I replace even more lines giving more detail, adding a little shading, or emphasizing the basic 3D geometry.

In particular, you can see that I've emphasized the cylinder shape of the neck, the spherical shapes around the deltoid and shoulder joints as well as the upper and lower torso and the hip. I've also added a little shape to the arms. This helps me "see" the figure in 3 dimensions instead of a flat 2d image.

I've replaced all my original reference lines with basic 2d representations of 3d shapes. Handsome fellow, isn't he?

I've started to try and give a little shading to the 3d figure, but you cxan see that I've lost some of the 3d appearance by removing the lines. It's a little hard for me to see where the shoulder ends and the neck begins.

I add shading and start to wonder what the darkest parts of the drawing will be, probabl some of the shadows around his testicles. At this point, I'm trying to figure out also where the brightest parts will be--what shines--probably parts of his chest and face. ...more to come.

I obviously used a computer to make this, so I was able to save all my versions. I combined a few of them into this, which I liked, so this is the finished sketch.
